Student Body

8' X 60'   2007

This mural resides in the cafeteria/lunch seating area of Community Magnet Charter School in Bel Air California.  It is a mixed media installation featuring painted walls, and collages mounted on wood that depict internal organs which are made from recycled food packaging.  The mural is divided into three sections.  One discuss’ healthy eating habits by presenting healthy food choices and by showing how the body uses nutrition to sustain itself.  Another section explains organic farming practices and how important it is to support holistic food production which is better for the body and better for the earth.  The last section brings awareness to the issue of recycling and what happens to the massive amounts of packaging waste that is created through food production and consumption.  For a selected period of time the students recycled their cafeteria straws and spoons which were cleaned and preserved in clear plastic tubes as a reminder of how quickly trash can accumulate, and how everyone can aid in the reduction of landfill waste by recycling, reducing, and reusing.  The Students are invited to write about ways that they recycle and healthy ways that they eat via three chalkboard surfaces that were created on the mural to stimulate an ongoing dialogue.
